So, I know you’ve seen everyone and their brother posting something about essential oils. There’s quite a rivalry going on out there between a couple companies. It seems to be the going craze right now.
Why? because people are trying to find natural, holistic ways to heal themselves with certain conditions. Do they help? Yes. Do they help you if you’re a skeptic and have a negative attitude? Yes, but you won’t know because you aren’t open to the experience. Just sayin.
No negativity here cuz it’s not allowed. I had enough of it growing up.
So, what are essential oils anyway?
According to NAHA – National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in their Vocabulary of Natural Materials (ISO/D1S9235.2) defines an essential oil as a product made by distillation with either water or steam or by mechanical processing of citrus rinds or by dry distillation of natural materials. Following the distillation, the essential oil is physically separated from the water phase.
According to Dr. Brian Lawrence “for an essential oil to be a true essential oil, it must be isolated by physical means only. The physical methods used are distillation (steam, steam/water and water) or expression (also known as cold pressing, a unique feature for citrus peel oils). There is one other method of oil isolation specific to a very limited number of essential oil plants. This is a maceration/distillation. In the process, the plant material is macerated in warm water to release the enzyme-bound essential oil. Examples of oils produced by maceration are onion, garlic, wintergreen, bitter almond, etc.”.
Where do they come from?
Essential oils are naturally found in seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They play an important role in cross pollination. Their composition varies depending on growing conditions, geographic location, time of day, season, method of distillation, when it was grown and making sure the production meets the highest standards.
What do you use them for?
Essential oils have been around thousands and thousands of years, being traced back to Biblical times. Uses include beauty treatment, food preparation and healing properties.
They have been used for many emotional and physical wellness applications.
You can use them topically (with a carrier oil such as Jojoba Wax, Coconut Oil, Shae Butter, Almond Oil, etc. you get the picture). You can diffuse them, inhale them and use them in cooking.
Each oil has its own specific uses and properties.
What’s the difference between a fragrance and essential oils?
Fragrances are synthetic, aromatic oils, that contain artificial substances. The ranges are extensive and inexpensive.
Some popular items that fragrances are used in are perfumes, cosmetics, flavorings, candles and soaps.
Essential oils are pure essential oils that are used to positively affect physical, emotional and mental health.
Not all essential oil brands are the same quality. Ensure that the oil you are using is made from pesticide-free plants grown in optimal conditions. Also, the brand should be a 100% pure, high-quality essential oil that does not contain any synthetic additives.
