Ok, so it’s September and it’s the time of year where there are a ton of fresh, local apples here. I go crazy and can’t stop eating them. They are just so tasty. I like them super hard and on the tart side. I’m not one for a mushy, sweet apple, like delicious apples. Nope, not my kind of apple, I’d rather go without. The nice thing is, you can very easily make your own apple sauce; whether it’s super chunky or super smooth, you have the option. It freezes well too, so it’s very easy to grab and go as a snack, throw in your favorite baking recipe in place of oil, or even make a pie. Here’s how I make mine.
Now I made a very small batch because I made it specifically for a recipe that I’ll be sharing with you next week. However, you can make as much as you want, and you can add as much or as little cinnamon and sugar as you like. We don’t like ours very sweet and frankly, even for this serving size, the amount of sugar was a bit much for us, but we aren’t the norm. hahaha. What I would recommend to you is start off with a little bit, mix your apples, cinnamon and sugar together and taste it, but remember, once the apples cook, their own sweetness will come out too. You can always add more sugar, but you can’t take it away.
The main ingredients are; apples, sugar and cinnamon. Here’s a recipe that made about 2 cups of homemade apple sauce. It comes out best if you use a variety of apples, but it’s totally up to you.
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/8 cup organic sugar
1 tbsp. Earth Balance (vegan butter substitute) or butter
Peel, core and cut your apples into even chunks
Place them in a bowl with the cinnamon and sugar and mix until all pieces are coated evenly
Heat a pot on medium high heat
Add Earth Balance or butter and let it melt
Add the apple mixture and lower the heat to medium (low if you aren’t watching it)
Cook until the apples are soft; about 8 – 10 minutes or so
And it’s done
The cool thing about making your own apple sauce is that you can control the types of apples, sugar and consistency. Feel free to play around with amounts of cinnamon and sugar and even add raisins if you want. Comment below if you make your own apple sauce and if you add different ingredients.
